GANG FAMILIES ARE MORE CONVENTIONAL THAN DEVIANT

In Hagedorn's Milwaukee research, an index was created to describe the families of gang members. Were families mainly "street socialized" or were they more conventional? The distribution is skew toward the conventional end. The components of the index are below.

Gang members come from families with a higher than average percentarge of heavy drug users. But note that more than two thirds of the males and a third of the females come from homes with NO heavy drug use.
